Context

The St Kilda Pier is a popular destination to enjoy fishing, strolling, and observing the colony of penguins and rakali (native water rats) that inhabit the rookeries of the pier. All of these while enjoying the panoramic views of Melbourne’s skyline.

CELO has participated in its redevelopment, a project that stands as one of the most significant upgrades in Australia's history, with a strong investment aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and ensuring the longevity of this iconic landmark from the mid-1800s.

The new pier design will improve public space including a disability-compliant walkway, new restrooms, tiered seating, a better protection and viewing area for the Breakwater’s Penguin colony, and the preservation of the heritage kiosk.

Constructed from a combination of concrete and timber, the pier has a length of about 450 meters, which is a disadvantage when it comes to redevelopment timelines. Amidst this ambitious endeavor, our client in Australia, ICCONS, introduced the Celo Strut Smart Fixings System to address the challenge of securing the polypropylene pipes to the pier deck efficiently and on time.

The challenge

Traditional stainless-steel clamping systems presented significant time constraints and cost implications to securely fasten polypropylene pipes to the 450-meter-long concrete pier deck. The challenge was finding a corrosion-resistant alternative that could be installed rapidly without compromising durability or reliability.

CELO solution

The Celo Strut Smart Fixings System has been a game-changing solution for this project. Consisting of lightweight fiberglass struts and nylon clamps, this system offered exceptional ease of handling, a rapid installation, as well as the resistance benefits that were highly required.

CELO’s fiberglass strut is 64% lighter than steel, can be easily cut on-site, and not only is corrosion-resistant but also electrical and thermal-resistant.

On the other hand, the easy twist-rotate-lock mechanism of our smart clamps allowed a quick alignment and firm clamping of the service pipework without requiring specialized tools or annoying nuts and bolts.

Conclusion

CELO’s solutions have played a pivotal role in expediting the construction processes at the same time as contributing to the overall durability and reliability of its infrastructure. As the project nears completion, the redeveloped St Kilda Pier will offer a rejuvenated experience for visitors, securing its status as a cultural and recreational landmark in Melbourne's landscape.
